Tell me about Your Business.
We do everything with respect to residential remodel and some light commercial if it’s custom or something that requires a lot of engineering and special lighting. We do huge room additions, small renovations, complete bath and kitchen makeovers, media rooms, second story addtions, garage enclosures, patio enclosures, roofs, outdoor kitchens, and outdoor living areas.

In the 20 years I’ve been in the business I’ve seen kitchens been taken down for clients by a general contractor and be down for months and be a nightmare for clients. That’s where I’ve modified my business. We specialize in coordination, so we deal with just one guy. That’s why, in a phenomenal amount of time, we can do a full custom kitchen. In two-three weeks we can be done and out.

How long have you been in business?
Since 1986 with my company.

How did you get your start?
I basically started in 1996 with expo design with my kitchen skills. I worked with them for 6 years in their design program with high end kitchens. That’s where a lot of the skill came from, from the kitchen design world and bath design world. All the rest we learned because we have done general construction for a long time.

What’s been one of the biggest hurdles that you have run into as a business owner, and how did you overcome it?
It was having quality people as employees. The way I overcame it is the common practice of playing the numbers game. I went through a filtration process and brought it down to 9 good men. That’s why I call my company the Home Remodeling Team because we are a team.

What’s one of the biggest misconceptions about the remodeling business?
That they don’t check the references close enough for the recent projects of the contractor. They need to pay attention to the last three or four jobs the contactor has done. If a client fails to go check out that information they might find themselves with a bankrupt contractor. I have a list of 300 references I hand out to every client. It is a constantly evolving list. As I add a recent project to the top, it pushes an older one off the bottom. That way there is always the most recent references, but there is always 300 on there.

Have you seen many changes in the industry over the years, and if so, how?
Design has changed. It’s important for contractors to stay abreast with what’s in fashion with the designs of the homes. If you don’t stay abreast, the home may be out of style two years after you leave the project.

Where do you get most of your business from: referrals, yellow page ads, internet resources, or repeat cusstomers?
Internet resources and Referrals

What one thing would you say makes your business unique in comparison to most others?
Everything we do is in house, and is part of the team. When the electrician shows up he’s got an HRT uniform on, when the plumber shows up, the granite installer, the framers, anyone really, they are all suited up because they are all part of the team.

What advice do you have for other, less experienced business owners just getting started?
Marketing and Advertisement would be the key. Bring something to the table for presentations. I bring a portfolio to everyone I see.

When a consumer is looking for a contractor what should they look for?
Google them online and see what’s available. Check the references. If the contractor can’t produce references there’s a 99% chance you’re in for a nightmare.

best fort worth remodel contractor

Tell me about Your Business.
I’m a general contractor. I build houses and do remodels. I do just about anything in residential construction and some in light commercial construction. I build a lot of office buildings for lawyers, mostly around the mid cities. I have built several thousand houses around the mid cities area too. About the only thing I don’t do is level concrete slabs.

How long have you been in business?
Since 1974. (37+ years)

How did you get your start?
I started out in Georgia, originally from Florida though. I graduated from High School and went into construction. There was lots of work in Georgia, and me and my wife and our kids moved up there in 1970. Then I worked there until 1974, I quit and went into business for myself.

What’s been one of the biggest hurdles that you have run into as a business owner, and how did you overcome it?
For the past year and half it’s been really slow with the way the economy is. The economy has really hurt the construction business. I have been in texas since 1984. I’ve always been busy, but in the last year and half it’s been hard to get work. It’s starting to pick up a little bit.

What’s one of the biggest misconceptions about the remodeling business?
A lot of homeowners are leary of contractors and think they are going to take them for their money. What people don’t realize is that there are just as many homeowners out there that screw over contractors. I’ve been ripped off several times through the years. I’ve never gone to court over it. It’s never been huge amounts. I usually don’t ask for any money up front from a customer. I take a draw every week. I charge them for that weeks materials and labors, so the most I usually miss out on is one weeks materials, which usually doesn’t kill you. It makes the homeowner feel better too, because they know I’m not going to take their money and run.

Have you seen many changes in the industry over the years, and if so, how?
Not a lot. Only thing I can say definitively, is the pricing.

Where do you get most of your business from: referrals, yellow page ads, internet resources, or repeat cusstomers?
Right now, referrals, webpage, but mostly referrals.

What one thing would you say makes your business unique in comparison to most others?
I go the extra mile.

What advice do you have for other, less experienced business owners just getting started?
I think the most important thing is honesty. If anyone deals dishonestly, it will catch up with them.
You got to have the right tools, and start advertising.
